Samsung Electronics Co. recorded its second consecutive quarter of record-breaking performance, with its semiconductor business posting operating profit of nearly 54 trillion won ($36.3 billion) in the first quarter of this year. Samsung Electronics announced on Thursday that its operating profit for the first quarter reached 57.23 trillion won, up 756.1 percent from the same period last year. This figure exceeds the market consensus of 45.6 trillion won by 25.3 percent, according to Yonhap Infomax. Revenue rose 69.2 percent to 133.87 trillion won, while net profit jumped 474.3 percent to 47.23 trillion won. Both revenue and operating profit hit all-time quarterly highs, extending records set in the previous quarter. The company attributed its performance to advances in artificial intelligence and proactive market responses. Favorable exchange rates also added about 1.8 trillion won to operating profit from the previous quarter, mainly benefiting its components business. By division, the Device Solutions (DS) unit, which oversees semiconductors, led earnings with 81.7 trillion won in revenue and 53.7 trillion won in operating profit, as higher memory prices and strong sales of AI-related products drove growth. The System LSI business improved earnings on increased sales of flagship system-on-chip products. The foundry business saw profit decline on seasonal factors but continued to secure orders in high-performance computing and optical communication modules. The Device Experience (DX) division, which handles finished products, posted 52.7 trillion won in revenue and 3 trillion won in operating profit. Revenue increased from the previous quarter following the launch of the Galaxy S26. Despite cost pressures, the division limited profit declines by focusing on higher-value products and improving resource efficiency. The Visual Display (VD) business improved profitability on solid sales of premium and large-screen TVs and better operational efficiency. The Digital Appliances (DA) business saw limited earnings improvement as rising costs and tariff impacts offset new air conditioner launches. Samsung Display Co. posted 6.7 trillion won in revenue and 400 billion won in operating profit, as weak seasonal demand for small and mid-sized panels was partly offset by strong demand for gaming monitor organic light-emitting diode (OLED) products. Harman International Korea recorded 3.8 trillion won in revenue and 200 billion won in operating profit, with earnings declining due to memory supply constraints, seasonal weakness in the audio market and higher development costs. Looking ahead, Samsung Electronics said it expects further improvement in the second quarter as memory prices continue to rise amid sustained investment in AI infrastructure. The company said it will respond to strong AI-driven memory demand and plans to supply initial samples of HBM4E to strengthen its technology leadership. The DX division will focus on expanding premium product sales and improving structural cost efficiency, while strengthening competitiveness and securing future growth drivers.
