LG Uplus said it has launched a generative AI-based AI financial assistant in partnership with Welcome Savings Bank. The assistant has been integrated into Welcome Savings Bank's mobile app, Welcome Digital Bank, marking the first deployment of such a service in South Korea's savings bank sector. The system combines LG AI Research's large language model EXAONE with the bank's proprietary data, along with LG Uplus' expertise in building and operating AI agents. With the introduction of the AI assistant, users can interact with the app in a conversational manner to perform financial tasks. For example, a user can ask, "Show me the transactions I made yesterday," and immediately receive the relevant information without navigating complex menus. Both voice and text inputs are supported. The service also enables common functions such as fund transfers, account inquiries and transaction history checks, while providing personalized responses and financial insights based on user activity and data. LG Uplus said security has been reinforced by incorporating final confirmation steps for transaction execution, reflecting the always-on nature of mobile banking services. The AI assistant was introduced on March 23 and underwent about a month of pilot operation. The company said it received favorable feedback, particularly from users aged 60 and above who are less familiar with mobile applications. Both companies plan to enhance the assistant's performance based on feedback collected during the pilot phase, including improving contextual understanding and handling of complex queries through the adoption of more advanced AI models. Ahn Hyung-kyun, vice president and head of Enterprise AI Business Group at LG Uplus, said the launch demonstrates the combination of EXAONE-based localized AI technology and Welcome Savings Bank's innovation efforts, adding that the company plans to expand conversational AI services across the broader financial sector, including insurance, securities and card services. Kwon Young-kwan, executive vice president and head of the AIC Service Division at Welcome Savings Bank, said the AI assistant will fundamentally change how financial services are delivered.
