I am separating this review into several sections, reviewing what I like about the color capabilities of the Kindle Colorsoft, and then the capabilities of the new generation of the Kindle colorsoft in general, followed by what I don’t like about the Kindle Colorsoft. The Kindle Colorsoft’s Color capabilities: I really like the way this new Kindle Colorsoft displays color. I like that the book covers in the Home and Library view are all in color and comic books from the Kindle store look great. The 7 inch screen size is a little small for most comics, but you can either double tap on a frame to go to frame by frame viewing mode, or you can even zoom in by pinching your fingers together and expanding out. Overall for me this was very workable for viewing comic books, but without these features the words would have been too small for me to comfortably read on a 7 inch screen. Magazines look good too and it's nice to be able to see figures or pictures in a book in color instead of grayscale. However, I found that Epub formatted books and the Kindle magazines I have didn’t have the ability to zoom in on the pictures. With PDF books I found that the fonts were very small on the 7 inch screen and since it is a PDF there is no way to adjust the font size. However, you can zoom in or you can change the orientation to landscape to increase the size of the page slightly; although this does require you to scroll up and down to see the whole page. Also landscape isn’t accomplished by simply turning your Kindle on its side, you need to go into font settings and change to the mode manually. So, although I overall give this Kindle 5 stars as a great way to read books and comics and I love its color capabilities, there aren’t a lot of ways you can take advantage of the color unless you read a lot of comic books, magazines or the like. You will need to decide if the color capabilities are worth the additional price for you based on what you read. The New Generation of Kindles: I really like the capabilities of the new Kindles. I have always preferred e-ink for reading vs looking at a tablet or phone. I find it much easier on my eyes and it feels like I am reading an actual book. I like that the newer Kindles have “front lighting”, so you can read in any environment without needing a reading lamp. The original Kindles didn’t have the front lighting, so like a normal book you needed to sit under a light source to be able to read the page. The front lighting is much easier on my eyes than back lighting (like a phone or tablet uses). I also really like that they have “warmth” settings which make the normally white/blue light of the Kindle more “yellow” for nighttime reading. I find the controls very easy and intuitive to use and so far the battery life has been great. This model is supposed to last up to 8 weeks on one charge (depending on use). I’m pleased that the charging port is USB-C, so I can use the same cable I use for my phone and laptop to charge the Kindle. A charge cable is included but there isn't a charging plug included. I find the 16GB of onboard storage more than suitable. Even with color items (which are generally larger) you can fit a lot of books in the 11.25GB of available storage space. I was surprised to see that the Kindle also supports audiobooks and that my Audible books were automatically displayed in my library with my Kindle books. There are no built in speakers or earphone jack on the Kindle, so you need to pair bluetooth earbuds to the kindle to listen to the books. There is also a function to read the page to you as well. I found pairing my earbuds was very easy, but I also found the sound left something to be desired. It's a nice feature to have, but I will stick to using my phone for audiobooks. One of my favorite things about this Kindle is how light it is. It feels great in my hand and I can hold it easily with my fingertips. I also think it's great that it is waterproof. What I don’t like about the new Kindles: My biggest complaint about the new Kindles is about their capabilities when using media that isn’t supplied by Amazon (things other than Kindle Books, Audible Audiobooks). The Kindle book experience is great with all of your books instantly available for you to review. However if you want to import an epub, mobi, PDF or other document things get kind of difficult. Based on my experience only Windows systems can mount the new Kindles like a drive to transfer media to it. I have a Mac and I needed to download a “Send to Kindle” app or use the “Send to Kindle” website to transfer media. And as I found out you almost need to use these options if you want the items you are loading to come through properly formatted and in color. However there are some limitations with “Send to Kindle”. There is no support for mobi files and only up to 50mb files are supported through the app (this includes all supported types including PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, EPUB).
