Tencent Eyes European Market with Cloud Services, Setting Stage for Showdown with Market Leader Amazon Global IT giant Tencent is expanding its cloud business operations in Europe. The company's strategy involves leveraging its technological strengths in video streaming optimization, gaming infrastructure, and messaging services to penetrate the market. Dawson Tong, CEO of Tencent Cloud Group, told CNBC in an interview on the 17th, "We have technological advantages in specific industry sectors. We plan to introduce this expertise to Europe and are in discussions with several potential clients." Tencent has identified cloud technologies for European deployment including video streaming optimization, gaming infrastructure, and hosting of "super apps" like WeChat. The market entry approach will involve providing services linked with multiple cloud providers rather than exclusive partnerships with specific large corporations. The company is also expanding its AI business. Tencent has developed its own AI model "Hunyuan" in China and is applying models from Chinese AI startup DeepSeek to some products. CEO Tong stated, "We plan to take a similar approach in Europe and are considering products based on local models." This European market offensive is interpreted as Tencent's move to expand its Asia-focused cloud business globally. Currently, Tencent holds approximately 5% of the global cloud market share. The company's global expansion is indeed gaining momentum. Tencent recently participated in "Viva Technology 2025," Europe's largest technology event held in Paris, France, where it emphasized multi-cloud strategies and connected platform transformation. Tencent's European entry is expected to inevitably lead to competition with market leader Amazon. According to market research firm Synergy Research Group, Amazon Web Services (AWS) holds about 30% market share in the European cloud market, ranking first. Microsoft Azure (22%) and Google Cloud (10%) follow. However, Tencent's cloud technology capabilities are criticized for having a weaker technology portfolio compared to AWS and lower global recognition and trust.
