AI decoupled production from comprehension. Teams can now ship working software that nobody on the team understands. When the manifesto was written, working software meant someone understood the problem enough to write, debug, and test every line of code. Someone necessarily understood all implementation choices made along the way. With AI, this is no longer true. That assumption is embedded in Principle 7. Original: "Working software is the primary measure of progress." This principle is now actively misleading. Working software is no longer evidence that anyone understood the problem, designed the solution, or can maintain what was built. A team measuring progress by working software alone will measure themselves as thriving while their comprehension degrades.
